5 Days ‘Til the Best-Dressed Evening Surf Session Ever

Even brunch and shopping proving ineffective at elevating Melissa to her usual chirpy buoyancy, Kelsie knew something was seriously wrong. In all the years they’d been friends, there were few things that couldn’t be at least partially overcome with a short stack and some retail therapy.

Abandoning the commercial world for the natural one, they kicked through the sand on the nearby beach, soaking up rays that had Kelsie pulling down the sleeves of her light sweater to keep from getting roasted, until they found two swings on a warped wooden beam. Meant for child-sized lower halves, the swings accommodated theirs with only the slight bite of chain into Kelsie’s outer thigh, and she watched Melissa stare out at the turquoise sea with an unceasing furrow in her forehead that really didn’t match their current place in the world.

“Are you going to tell me what you’re really doing here, or do I have to torture it out of you?”

“I told you.” Melissa was quick with her response. “We just need a vacation.” Looking over, though, the lie faltered, and, as she dropped Kelsie’s gaze to look back out at the water, as much as she didn’t want to, Kelsie felt bad for her, and concerned, and it was really annoying when she wanted to let her anger reign supreme. “Jay wants to have a baby,” Melissa at last confessed.

“Oh, I see.” Kelsie nodded her confusion. “So, you had to explain to him about boys and girls then?”

Melissa’s laugh genuine, it was so laden with other things, it seemed to drop into the sand at their feet.

“He wants me to have a baby,” she said, but Kelsie sort of already figured as much.

“Okay.” Still, she didn’t see the problem. “That’s good, right? I thought you wanted kids.”

“I do,” Melissa uttered. “We do. It’s just…” Watching her shift in the swing, Kelsie couldn’t tell if it was physical discomfort, or discomfort with the conversation. “I don’t know if I want them right now.”

“Why?” Smolder of concern sparking, Kelsie furrowed too. “Everything’s okay, right?”

“Yeah. God, yeah.” Melissa glanced to her again, and they both breathed a little easier in the fresh island air. “We’re fine. It’s just…” Her lips rolling inward, as if to keep whatever she was thinking shut up tight, tears formed in Melissa’s eyes, and every smidge of anger Kelsie harbored went on temporary hiatus. Crossing the space between them, her hand grasped Melissa’s where it rested against her leg, and watery blue eyes looked up at her. “I’m afraid.”

“Of what?” Kelsie asked. “Being a mom?”

“Not just that,” Melissa said. “Of all of it. I’m afraid everything’s going to change.”

Melissa’s free hand closing around her wrist, it trapped Kelsie in a human vise, and she rested her head against the chain, glancing out at the vast blue. Laken was right, she realized. She should have been paying closer attention. She should have seen this coming. It wasn’t the first time she and Melissa had been in this place together.
